在国外，车内空气污染已经成为公认的威胁人体健康的严重的环境污染现象，各汽车消费大国对此高度关注。事实上，早在上世纪八九十年代，美国就曾出现过多起因车内空气污染伤人致死的事件。鉴于此，美国把室内和车内污染作为人类健康的五大危害之一。2006年,美国AnnArbor环境集团发布了题为“任何速度都有毒”的检测报告，称车内空气中的有害化合物含量是家居和办公室中的5到10倍。该集团采集了11个国际著名汽车品牌的车内灰尘样本以及挡风玻璃薄膜样本，经化验分析后显示，车内普遍存在对人体有害的物质，车内坐椅、地毯、扶手和电线胶皮等都会产生对人有害的化学物质。研究测试发现，新车出厂后车内有害气体的挥发时间至少需要6个月以上。
车内空气应受关注
欧盟环保部门和美国环保局要求汽车制造厂所使用的材料必须申报，并必须经过环保部门审查以确保对环境和人体危害程度达到最低点后才能使用。申报者一旦违反规定，将负担巨额的罚款，还要召回产品清理污染，甚至主要负责者将会被判刑。日本汽车生产厂商专门针对车内空气污染开发了一系列附属产品，包括带除菌功能的新型汽车空调等。韩国汽车比较接近日本车系，通过高科技自动监测空气质量。高档车还配备了空气质量传感器，一旦车外的空气质量超标，就会自动切断风门，阻止废气流入车内。2007年4月，美国生态研究中心公布了一份十大“毒车”黑名单，多个知名汽车品牌上了这张黑榜单。
由于我国目前尚未出台车内空气质量的具体标准，加之家庭汽车市场的旺盛需求，促使很多汽车下了生产线就直接进入市场，完全没有经过专业部门的测试，各种配件和材料中的有害气体在没有得到充分释放的情况下完全留存在车内，而新车车主直接成为吸收者。据专家介绍，车内空气的污染源无处不在：操控台、坐椅，车顶毡、脚底垫以及零配件和胶水等汽车本身的物件都是在一刻不停地释放着有害气体。大量对人身体有害的甲醛、苯、甲苯、丙酮等物质充斥车内。
很显然，国内汽车生产商在从美、日、德等国家引进汽车制造技术的同时，治理车内污染的技术和意识却没有同步引进。
我国车内空气标准缺失
与国外二十年前就启动的车内空气污染治理相比，我国对车内污染的重视和治理显然起步较晚而且一直难产。由于《车内空气污染物浓度限值及测量方法》标准迟迟不能出台，目前对车内环境的检测还主要是参照室内环境的检测标准。从2004年至今，有关车内空气污染物浓度限制标准的制定几经反复，却一直没有定论。
目前，中国汽车环境专业委员会已经成立，车内空气污染控制标准正在紧锣密鼓地制定当中。
